This is one of the most unique and best
skinning knives we build. The "ulu" (pronounced "OO-loo") is the name
used to describe an ancient knife style of the north. Used by Alaskan
natives for centuries, the ulu is rounded and has a long efficient
cutting radius unsurpassed for skinning, fleshing, and cutting meat from
the bones. Natives and many professional hunters use the knife today and
prefer it for many applications over traditionally shaped knives, due to
ease of use and effectiveness. Used in combination with a traditional
knife, the pair becomes unsurpassed in field-dressing tasks. Our Hunter
Ulu and our Magnum Ulu should not be confused with the cheap "tourist"
models commonly available in magazines and souvenir shops across Alaska.
Our blades are handmade from American D-2 high carbon tool steel,
individualized hand ground, finished, and sharpened to hair-splitting
razor edge. Our heat treat process is a double draw method and then each
blade is cryogenically treated so that the cutting edge is extremely
sharp and stays that way even after extended use. Blades are hardened to
a Rockwell of 58-60. Coils on either side of the 2-1/4" wide blade are
designed to allow the user`s fingers to comfortably position themselves
when using the knife. The blade is approximately .105" thick. Because
each blade is individually hand ground, the thickness may vary slightly.
The handle is designed to comfortably fit in the palm of your hand.
Handles are black rubberized "Suregrip," desert ironwood, G-10 micarta,
and genuine stag. The oiled leather sheath is very compact and designed
to worn on your belt. |
